Why does it take a Dutchman to teach us English?

Jos Frederiks has devoted his life to listening to what people say. As a psychologist, he has listened to over 18,000 conversations with his clients and has come to an important conclusion. We talk without thinking and listen without hearing!  Our vocabularies are shrinking, as are our abilities to converse.  So are we speaking double Dutch or is he?

In his new book “Imprisoned by Words”  Jos believes that most of the time we are talking in automatic and not really thinking about what we are saying. “So often if I repeat back to somebody what they actually said, they tell me that’s not what they meant!” says Jos.

Our listening skills are even worse. When somebody is talking to us, we only half listen because we are trying to think what we are going to say next. Have we lost the art of Communication?

“English is such a beautiful and rich language, but it is in danger.  Most of our conversations are now made with our thumbs on our phones, and not through talking.  English is now reduced to a series of abbreviations  rather than words, LOL!”

Words are the most powerful things in the Universe. They can inspire us to great achievements. The right Words can help to  find us a life partner or at the very least, to get our faces slapped! Words can even persuade us to take our life insurance!  Words are powerful when used well – and dangerous when used with bad intent.

Jos Frederiks was born and raised in Brabant in the Netherlands in an entrepreneurial family. He started his career as a sales manager in business services and worked at a high level in some of the largest international companies. He quickly learnt the value of good communication and how the intelligent use of words can create positive outcomes.  He also discovered that he was a natural coach and was often asked by his colleagues for advice and guidance. This helped him develop the art of listening and a curiosity of the way that people use words so carelessly when they talk. As a result he studied and gained qualifications in psychology and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

In 2005 he took this knowledge and the experience of working with people in the corporate world and started his own consultancy, VidaSense in the Netherlands.

Jos has become a sought after public speaker and has built a reputation for helping both individuals and companies to change outcomes by communicating better.

I have learned the art of listening in order to understand them. And what their needs are. What I have also learned is that what people say may not be what they meant!

I wrote this book to help people become more aware of the words they use and to improve their outcomes, by increasing their vocabulary! This book shows you how!

Because speech comes so naturally to us, we hardly ever think about it. Most of the time we respond automatically by saying the first thing that comes into our head. No wonder we find ourselves in trouble from time to time
